Packing list basics
What is an export packing list?
An export packing list describes the physical contents of an international shipment. It helps a carrier, freight forwarder, warehouse, buyer or customs broker understand how many packages are moving, what each package contains and how much the cargo weighs.
Unlike a commercial invoice, the packing list generally does not show product prices. Its job is to record physical details such as cartons, pallets, dimensions, net weight and gross weight. The goods descriptions and quantities should still agree with the commercial invoice.

What is the difference between net and gross weight?
Net weight is the weight of the goods alone. Gross weight includes the goods plus cartons, pallets, wrapping and other packing materials.
Should the packing list show prices?
Usually no. Transaction values normally belong on the commercial invoice, while the packing list focuses on package and weight information.
Do quantities need to match the commercial invoice?
Yes. The product description and total quantity should be consistent across both documents. Any mismatch can lead to questions during shipping or clearance.
Is one packing list format accepted everywhere?
No. Requirements vary by destination, goods, carrier and trade procedure. Confirm the final document with your freight forwarder, customs broker or buyer.
